Beware! You are just taken for a ride at Michy's

by raphaelb at Citysearch

The decor is awful considering it is the result of the transformation of an old retail store into a cold looking overcrowded restaurant with some fabric hanging from the walls. The sticky plastic "Dinette" style chairs are very uncomfortable. The food is really not noteworthy. I had to send my snapper back twice for being undercooked and finally just gave up. We had to ask for salt and pepper since none was availble at the table. Service was slow and spotty. The portions are ridiculously small and the prices are insultingly high! The menue is very limited and unimaginative. This reminded me of the old classic "The Emperor's New clothes"--does Michelle's name carry so much weight that nobody will wake up to the fact that you are just taken for a ride at Michy's?

  • Pros: None
  • Cons: Unimaginative food, small portions, insultingly high prices.

Average experience, expected more, not worth the $100 price tag

by seventhirtyone at Citysearch

Making a reservation was a bit difficult we did get a 6.30, but when we showed up closer to 7 the place was near empty, 5 tables occupied maybe, I had originally asked for a 7 reservation I was assured there wasn't space. The service was good, nice people, not too attentive, but quick. There was a woman walking around in jeans, wearing shoes that fit her weirdly, an ugly green crocheted sweater over a brown 3/4 length sleeve cotton shirt-she looked horrible and I unfortunately assume she may have been the owner. In one of the reviews I had read it stated that this is a place where people get dressed up to go whomever this woman was put the image to shame. I ordered a half plate of the truffled polenta which was out of this world. The polenta was runny but I didn't mind, except it wasn't served with a spoon and there was no spoon on the table so toward the end of the bowl it became difficult to eat with a fork - but the flavor was outstanding. The half serving was more than enough.

My boyfriend had the ceviche. It was ok, nothing to write home about. Cold, the flavor of the lime stood out, the lettuce at the bottom of the bowl was very green, it looked ok - but it was just ceviche.

My second dish was a half plate of the potato gnocchi with oxtail. The flavor was steady, tasted like a stew, but nothing stood out - maybe a bit too much salt. It was just ok. The gnocchi texture didn't do anything for me, there was no flavor. The oxtail was fine. I was hoping to be swept away by the flavor, like I was with the polenta. I didn't finish the dish.

My boyfriend had the seafood linguini, when they say the seafood is cut up into tiny pieces they aren't joking. It was too watery. No outstanding flavor element. Steady, but kind of bland. The wine was outstanding.

The place is pretty but I feel bad for anyone who gets stuck with the table at the front door. As we entered and left, the door brushed against the person at the table. Doesn't do much for the image.

  • Pros: Truffled polenta. Wine. Comfy booth seat.
  • Cons: $100 to enjoy only 1 dish. Cold room. Bland flavors overall.

Badly Needing Re-Contruction in the Construction Zone

by lynnsampson at Citysearch

Having always been a fan, I was so disappointed that our great hope for a truly landmark restaurant in the neighborhood has slipped away. I actually had to send the fish back it was so "mealy" and very obviously, not fresh. The short rib favorite was extremely fatty and salty. The "jamon crepes" were missing the "jamon". After sending a meal back to the kitchen, there was not even an offer of a "coffee on the house" to apologize for the disappointment. Very heartbreaking to a frequent customer who spends an average per person tab of $200. The excuse was that everyone was travelling in Europe - perhaps then, the room should have closed for a holiday rather than ruin a beautiful reputation. The only saving grace - the always fabulous sommelier.

MY FAVORITE RESTAURANT IN MIAMI!

by brijette at Citysearch

Where to begin? I am in the biz and only in my restaurant have I ever seen management take such great care of guests that are in the service industry, until Michy's. On my first visit, we didn't make reservations and were happy to dine at the bar. Our bartender was great as was everything else to follow. Food was excellent!! I absolutely love how the menu is done, with the option of half and full size portions. Now, not to insult the Chef that I work for, but never have I ever had a better frois gras in my life then here. I never even liked it before I had Chef Michelle's, which is the same response that a friend of mine had when I forced her to try it against her will... and now she won?t stop raving about it! Sweetbreads, AMAZING. Polenta, AMAZING... rich but amazing none the less. Civeche? The best I've ever had, complete with corn nuts for added crunch and flavor. Honestly, this restaurant is a true gem. You will not see a fashion model hostess. It might not be in the best location, but once inside, you forget about your surroundings. I am so happy that a restaurant like this has opened and will frequent it as long as it's there. This is what restaurants are supposed to be like.

  • Pros: EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!
  • Cons: Location, but that is easily forgotten...

Delicious food!

by lunasgurl at Citysearch

My family ate at Michy's for the first time this weekend - and it was delicious! You can order most of the items on the menu in half or full orders, which allows you to sample a bunch. The Bibb Salad was incredible, as was their special Mac-n-Cheese. My favorite entree was the Skirt Steak w/ Chimichurri and Bearnaise sauces. Yum! The Apple Tart Tatin and Bread Pudding were great for dessert. Also found the wine/champagne menu to be excellent. Many of the dishes are actually quite affordable - just watch out because you'll want to order one of everything. Oh, and it's not nearly as dressy as many reviews made it seem... which I liked. Only con is that it's at 69th and Biscayne in a building and neighborhood that has no charm. Otherwise, really great!

My First Time at Michy's 04/26/07

by nativeinmiami at Citysearch

Our party (we were two) was seated immediately (we had a reservation). The ambiance is reminiscent of a restaurant you would find in the West Village, or SoHo, in NYC. Personally I liked it (for whatever that is worth).

Service was friendly as well as efficient. They were professional and helpful.

Now on to the most important part-the food.

Everything may be ordered in "half" or "full" portions. No, the half portions are not enough for an entree, unless you are in training for "America's Next Top Model". On average, half portions will run you about $19 per plate, $32 for full portions. This is just an average for anyone reading this.

To start, we ordered jambon (ham) and cheese croquettes. They arrived and were perfectly crispy and not greasy, on the outside. However the center was cold. I searched for the "jambon", without luck.

Next we ordered the braised short ribs, and the codfish (half orders). Two perfect sized tasting portions arrived. Both were tasty, although as a personal preference I found the ribs a bit too fatty. The mashed potatoes with the short ribs were delicious. The codfish was perfectly cooked, and came with flash fried spinach.

Afterwards we ordered two more half orders. Oink! We asked for the paella and the friend chicken. The paella arrived with a small piece of fish. The rice tasted like the over cooked portion you scrap from the bottom of the pan. We asked the waiter and he said that is how the rice's texture is. Right. Chicken was good, sauces ok, nothing great. A spicier, or more complex sauce would be a better choice (FYI to the restaurant).

Dessert was good. I had a bit of my friend's. She ordered the bread pudding.

As a fair person I would need to go back again. You can't base a restaurant on one visit alone.

Still people keep in mind isn't not cheap. With a few glasses of wine, and gratuity, the total check came out to $190, and we did not order expensive wine.

Hope this review helps.

Best food in Miami

by aw141 at Citysearch

I can't understand the mediocre reviews on this site--Michy's is easily the best restaurant in Miami. The food was impeccable--it was a perfect dining experience, and surprisingly reasonable in price. Every dish we had--and we tried 7--was perfect. I can't wait to go back.

  • Pros: Excellent food; reasonably priced.
  • Cons: Short wait for a table.

Just OK.

by miami111 at Citysearch

VERY disappointing. I've heard the hype on Michy's for a while and decided to finally give it a try. I was not impressed. The food was ok, not great and very salty. We ordered one of the specials as an appetizer, it was a small portion and had NO flavor, better yet when we got the bill our flavorless appetizer was $75! Just to top things off my friend ordered a bottle of wine for the table and when we got the bill we found they had brought us the same winery but a higher end (and way more expensive) bottle! I don't mind paying for good food but I actually felt like I was ripped off.

once for fun, twice for food and then go somewhere else.......

by georgiegurl at Citysearch

Service is fine if not a little too friendly , not really professional, what you need to remember here is that this is a family affair and that her parents virtually eat there every night. She comes out to embrace them etc etc on a nightly basis....her sister did a huge disservice by thrifting the room and doing a 60's theme that has zero atmosphere. The food is fairly priced, decadent and worth it and the scene is similar you always see someone you know or wish you did, one night Gloria Estefan was in there with her whole family and J.lo and Marc A entourage.......go once for fun ,go twice for food and then go somewhere else............

  • Pros: nice food for the price.......
  • Cons: horrible neighbourhood at night , ditzy staff, terrible room..........

Service is lacking

by bigdecision at Citysearch

It's New Year's Eve and I just left Michy's a few hours ago after a prix fixe tasting menu with flight of wines. This is the second time that I've dined there, and though I've really, really tried to be positive about the experience, I can honestly say that it's been so-so. The tab for our table of six was approximately $1350. I feel that restaurants at this price point should offer impeccable service, but overall ours was lacking. Each of the 5 courses arrived slowly, one entree was not cooked as ordered, and unfortunately a server spilled water all over one member of the party. The menu items were good, but nothing amazing. My starter was a torchon of foie gras that was ok...I just had a torchon of foie gras at Daniel in Manhattan last week that was fantastic, by comparison. My entree of filet mignon was dusted with a gremolata that seemed more grainy than flavorful. Dessert was also another tired incarnation of the molten chocolate cakes that are so popular these days. Of note, the wine selections were excellent...many thanks to the sommelier.

Summary...good, definitely not great...absolutely needs more work to justfy the price.
