My wife and I have just finalized our mortgage. While one would not think this would not normally inspire a write-up, we're so relieved and grateful we decided that this was just the thing to do. We're New Yorkers – unfortunately that makes us somewhat cynical when it comes to working with brokers of any kind (if you've ever lived in NY, I don't have to explain.) Basically, we expect the worst and hope for the best. After years of visiting S Fl., we finally decided to take the plunge and invest in a home. Cut to getting a mortgage. Neither of us are particularly savvy in this department. We started out at Washington Mutual. The gentleman plugged in numbers, hardly looked up at us and left us more confused than when we arrived. I felt like if we had arrived on a different day or saw a different broker, we would have left with a different rate. Over the next few days, we called everyone we knew in the area and ended up with two referrals, both to Bruce Handfinger of Choice Mortgage. Optimistically cautious, we scheduled an appointment. From the moment we walked in, what a difference. He seemed like someone we already knew. Bruce spent as much time as we needed and explained everything (in terms we could understand). As it turns out, we even came away with some info about the closing that saved us quite a lot. I called him several times with questions, and each time he was responsive and patient. From start to finish – this was easy (and we were in NYC for the majority of the time). And most importantly, we feel confident that we got the best rate we could have. In the end, our rate was lower than what we were offered at Washington Mutual and the closing cost was hundreds less. My wife and I just calculated how much more we would have spent over the next 20 years with the first rate we were offered. We could buy a third home with what that would have cost us. Bottom line – we're thrilled. Thank you, Bruce, for making two jaded old New Yorkers a little less cynical.
