Camping where??

by JFGone

The term "camping" got me interested but it took me a long distance phone call to find out the camping is for Girl/Boy Scouts only. PITA

Beach may be great though.

Natural beauty and a myriad of recreational activities abound at this spectacular state park.

The Scene
Over a mile of natural beach, eight fishing platforms, and the oldest lighthouse in the South (built in 1825) are just a few of the attractions at Bill Baggs State Park. Eighteen covered pavilions provide sheltered picnic areas overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay. A colorful stand rents everything an active beachgoer could want: bicycles, hydrobikes, in-line skates, ocean kayaks, windsurf boards, beach chairs, and umbrellas. Guided tours of the lighthouse and cultural complex are also available.

A great oasis

by rubenb

I completely agree with the first reviewer. During the eight years I lived in Miami and during prior and subsequent visits, this has been one of my favorite spots to just relax for a couple of hours or a weekend picnic beach going. Where you actually get to experience both, the grassy and shaded areas with picnic tables as well as the ocean and the sandy beach. Unfortunately most of the coastline along Dade County was altered forever after Hurricane Andrew, nonetheless, this remains a great getaway place for locals and a worthy destination for visitors.

  • Pros: Good facilities, Proximity to city

Perfect

by blipe27

While staying with a friend in Cocoanut Grove, she recommended Key Biscayne for the beach day I was so desperately craving. When we got there it was just perfect. There were no crowds, the sand was perfect, the water was perfect, and we even rented the little carriage bikes to go around the island. Had I known that this was considered one of the top rated beaches in the country or that there was so much to do, we would have explored much more. In short, we STILL talk about how great that beach was, second only to the beaches of St. Thomas. Would go back in a heartbeat.

  • Pros: Great Sand, Beautiful Foliage, Wildlife

No Trees

Bill Baggs in my opinion has one of Florida's nicest beach. Unfortunately, Hurricane Andrew destroyed most of the lush plant life that was here before. There are many things to do at the park. One of my favorite activities is fishing and snorkeling. I once caught a 7lb Mutton Snapper while fishing atop the rocks in front of the old lighthouse. Aside from fishing and snorkeling the swimming is great and there are plenty of picnic tables all over the park. A word of advice *arrive early* people start arriving at the park around (8:00-8:30) after 9:30 expect to see the crowds of people flood in.

  • Pros: Great swimming, clean beach, nice scenery
  • Cons: , crowded, pic area far from bch
