I am rating only the food = excellent "home made" real peruvian food

by csleon

I must say that my Sister and I were impressed by "El Chalan" delicious home made peruvian food. They should keep the same CHEF and they should renovate the restaurant. I will go back for sure.

Cocina casera sabrosa y fresca

by bellesguard

  • Cons: Parking. They close when they want

A great deal

by hogc

This is a restaurant in South Beach that serves typical Peruvian food. The ambiance is not great...the tables are all crowded together and the restaurant just lacks any style whatsoever. I like it though, it reminds me of the restaurants in Peru, simple and homely. Most of the staff there do not speak English, but the menus are bilingual and the items are numbered so the non-spanish speaker can just indicate what he wants. This is not typical Latino cuisine. Peruvian food also has a type of fusion with Asian cuisine, due to the many Asians that have resettled there. There are different types of noodles and fried rice on the menu. My sis ordered the sauteed noodles with chicken. Very good...slightly different from what Asian Americans prepare although you have the same background of soy sauce, vegetables, and noodles. I ordered Bistic a la Pobre and got a large thin-sliced steak with two fried eggs, white rice, plantains, lettuce and tomatoes, and a side of beans that look to be garbanzo. The steak is not anything high-quality but it is decent and huge. The beans were great. They were slightly seasoned with cilantro...very typical of Peruvian food. This food is for the diner that wants something different and likes to try food of different cultures. It is not for the diner that is looking for ambiance.

  • Pros: great food, great value
  • Cons: poor ambiance, staff does not speak english, noisy
