Editorial Review for Five Guys – by Rick Munarriz

In Short
If you're craving old-fashioned, hand-formed burgers--you know, the type that take two hands and a few napkins to vanquish--then Five Guys is the place for you. The retro appeal is obvious, though the homage to the carefree 1950s isn't as over-the-top as Johnny Rockets. The menu is basic. Burgers, hot dogs, and hand-cut fries that are served up naked or spiked with Cajun seasonings make up the entirety of the menu. Simple stuff. Tasty stuff.

The Extras

The fries are done up in peanut oil, but it won't be the first peanut sampling for you. Shelled peanuts are complimentary as you wait for your order.

Save Money

Craving your burgers in moderation? The menu offers smaller beef patty versions of all four of the burger options. Ask for refills, too. They're free.

I went last night to the new store on Kendall Drive near 107th and let me tell you it ROCKED! The place was a little darker inside than I expected and the crowd was starting to thin out because it was 8pm so I only waited a couple minutes to order. The people were friendly enough and the place looked hospital sterile clean. Almost too clean for Miami. At any rate, the cute girl behind the register recommended the bacon burger so I got that with the Cajun fries and the usual toppings. Even though that had like 20 free toppings I kept my order simple, I am not a fan of jalepenos and mushroooms but I did get the grilled onions. After ordering I was told to eat some free peanuts and was pointed to a bin off to the left. They were salty shelled peanuts free for the taking so I grabbed a handful and walked to the back to fill my coke cup. They have the usual drinks nothing too interesting just coke products and tea, sweatened and unsweatened. I got an unsweatened. I was hungry so I wolfed down a handful of nuts and as I was taking them to the trash my number was yelled from the back. I went and grabbed my food which was oddly in a brown bag, I guess labels are not used. I sat down and opened it up and inside was a MOUNTAIN of fresh crispy fries that were sweet, spicy, cripsy and light all at the same time. They were awesome...but WAY WAY WAY more than i could eat. The burger was simply wrapped in foil and weighed about 2lbs. It was huge and steaming hot. When I bit into it it was sublime. I havent had a burger this good since In-n-Out in California but this was better because it had BACON! When I finished a guy who I think was the manager saw my smile and said "what'd ya think?" I said it was amazing and he laughed and said "its what happens when you use everything fresh." I agreed and said thanks and on the way out he yelled "see ya tomorrow." I chuckled but as I walked I thought I actually may be back tomorrow. MY ADVICE - GO ITS GREAT!

Pros: The Burgers and fries are supurb

Cons: Its a bit sterile and clean for my taste

This place has great French Fries and good hamburgers. The hamburgers come out fresh. The food here tastes much better than any other fast hamburger place that I have been to in Florida. After you order, it takes about 5 minutes or so to get your food because they make it to order. They have lots of different condiments you can put on the burger if you want to make something special. My sister and I split a small order of fries because they give you a lot. I have not tried the hot dogs or the grilled cheese so I cannot comment on those. The service here is ok - no problems. The decorations are very basic; it is brand new store (and clean), yet looks a little old fashioned. The presentation is basic -- basic brown bags, styrofoam cups and foil wrap. That's fine because the food is so good. They have posters and stories about the chain up all over the walls. I have been there twice now and give it a high rating. I think they just opened one on North Kendall Drive kind of near Miami Dade College, which is closer to me so I will check that one out very soon.

Pros: Really Awesome French Fries and Hamburgers that are Good Quality

Cons: Presntation is so-so; no shakes yet; and parking situation is kinda tough at Midtown Miami location
