Editorial Review for Michy's – by Holly Hickman
In Short
The 60-seat dining room at this bistro has a bright, whimsical color scheme, including walls swathed in cobalt and buttressed by vibrant orange banquettes to white-clothed tables and seashell chanaliers. At Michy's, Bernstein has traded in the clean, delicate dishes she whipped up at Azul for a more dynamic Mediterranean palate. Simultaneously bold and refined dishes include peach-accented braised duck, handkerchief pasta with wild mushrooms and a raw bar featuring stone crab cocktails.

I have been at Michy's twice. I moved here from NY 6 months ago and finally decided to give it a try after hearing so many contradictory reviews from friends. I have to say the food and ingredients in general are top quality, even thought many of the dishes seem totally self indulgent to me. On both visits we found execution problems. The first time the "croquetas" were frozen in the core, not cold, frozen. The "short rib" on the first visit was tiny and the meat was tough. On the second visit the piece we got was twice the size and very moist and flavorful, truly delicious. Salads were good, the Ceviche had too much of a ginger taste. On the second visit we ordered the "cuatro leches" cake and the fruit on the sauce was sour, and tasted/looked like it had been sitting there for days again in the first visit the cake was perfect. Wine list is very good but be prepared to pay a 400% mark up price .Service was just good for Miami stanards but if you now better it is just barely average. When I had to go to the restroom I was shocked to see the wall needs to be scrubbed and painted urgently! they were out of soap and paper towels, and the restrooms were not clean. It seems to me that the owners spend all the money they save in rent , maintaining the locale and training employees in a great PR firm because the place is totally overrated and extremely over prized for the overall experience. I think this place has a great potential but they need to work on consistency and execution. All the problems we experienced could be forgiven to a small neighborhood place, but not to a restaurant that charges you as much as a NYC 4 stars restaurant. Overall a terrible value for what you spend there.
Pros: Different experience for Miami, good quality ingredients
Cons: Location, decor an overall value.

I was really wary of going to Michy's after reading the reviews on this site. To top it off, we were entering the restaurant as a friend was leaving and he declared the place "overhyped". I had also heard the place was over-priced, and they don't seem to have a website with a menu so I didn't even know if they'd have something I'd like for the price. Well, I have got to say, despite my reservations, I really enjoyed my experience there. First, the ambience is very comfortable and I really think that even though the decor is a bit of a hodgepodge, it does come together very nicely. Secondly, I am not a wine connoisseur by any means, but I thought the waiter recommended a great "light" red wine from the by the glass menu. It went very well with the dinner. I did think the menu was a bit win or miss. We tried the seared foie gras and duck confit to start. The foie gras was simply amazing- it really is the best I've had in Miami. The duck confit was dry and I can get it much better and cheaper elsewhere. Same thing happened with our entrees. Short ribs were probably the worst I've had in Miami and expensive. They weren't bad, but they didn't fall off the bone and melt in my mouth or anything. But the steak frites were delightful. I am not a bread pudding person but I followed the advice of the citysearch folks and ordered that for dessert- that too was amazing. So my consensus is that I can see why people may not have a positive experience at Michy's if they order a dish that is substandard. But there are dishes on the menu that I think are noteworthy and if you find the right thing you may just be hooked!
Pros: ambience, food, service
Cons: parking
