Editorial Review for Setai Hotel – by Stephen Feller

In Short
When Setai opened in late 2004, it became a contender for the title of most luxurious hotel in Miami Beach. Softly lit and decorated in dark wood and black granite, the hotel is a mood-calming oasis in the middle of raucous SoBe. The 133 well-appointed rooms spread through two buildings and feature Swedish Duxiana beds with Irish linen sheets, yoga mats, Lavazzo espresso machines, flat-screen plasma televisions and Bose surround sound.

I booked a single night as I was overnighting in Maimi on the way to St. Barths. When I booked, I was told that for $1520 a night I was getting a one bedroom suite on the club floor. When I checked in, the first room they put me in was a single small bedroom, no bath tub, a handicap shower, with a view of a construction site. After complaining, they moved me next door to a larger room with a alcove dining area. While this room did have a bath tub, the tub was small, ugly, in the bedroom and sitting about 2 feet in front of the bed! The flat screen tv was tiny and they had no pay per view. Floors were scuffed. Lights wouldn't brighten enough to read anything. Room service food was good and came quickly, but menu very limited (4 ish appetizers and 5 entrees). Despite calling twice, they never came to pick tray back up. The Butler service was intrusive, once walking directly into my room without knocking or ringing the door bell. Most of the staff is Asian, and most speak and understand very little English--clearly not enough to be proficient at their jobs. This is surprising as when I travel in Asia and stay at 5 star hotels I never have this problem. Fire alarm on my floor went off repeatedly. Finally, when it went off just after midnight I called the operator who said she didnt know anything about it. I then asked for the manager on duty who first told me she didn't know anything about it, then tried to say it was routine testing (after midnight in a hotel). She seemed put out when I suggested she send security to see if perhaps our floor was actually on fire. At best, this was a $500 to $700 per night hotel room. It definitely was not a $1520 per night room (and I regularly stay in $1500 a night rooms so I have a broad frame of reference.) This doesn't compare remotely to any of the Aman Resort Properties I have stayed at (including Aman Yara last February which was amazing).

Pros: Location good, room service food was good and quick, wireless

Cons: Room was terrible, service was bad, tv tiny, no pay per view, terrible value for money
