Editorial Review for Villagio – by Laura Burdick Sherman

In Short
Stylishly graceful inside and romantically lit outside, this Merrick Park restaurant breaks from the notion that family eateries must resound with clatter and serve heavy sauces. Catering to dress-for-success shoppers, with or without their children, this happening spot features a menu spanning all of Italy. Options include red snapper dentice, veal chops with portobello mushrooms, filet mignon and fish carpaccio along with classics such as pasta and pizza.

We went on a Sunday as a party of 4. The ambience was quite loud, and the indoor dining area was a single open space. The "look" was a mix of sports bar and an Italian cafeteria. The place is indeed "kid friendly", but it is far from romantic. Service was very slow, and conflicting menu information came from our regular waiter and the wine steward (who acted as a secondary waiter). The complimentary bread was fresh, albeit flavorless; the crust was VERY tough. The food was average; that it, it was not bad , though there was NOTHING memorable about it. The marinated sea bass was marinated in something that removed all flavor. The veal was good. The two appetizer soups were good (pasta fagioli) and almost bad (cream of artichoke). The prices were OUTRAGEOUS: $151 for entrees and a bottle of inexpensive red chianti ($23). The service was slow Conclusion: if you want to spend this kind of money, go elsewhere. Though the food was not bad, you could do much better. I am not being sarcastic when I say that the Olive Garden is much better than this place AND less expensive AND quieter AND more attentive. Sheesh, what a disappointment.

Pros: Convenient to Merrick Place

Cons: Expensive, average food at BEST, slow

I like it. Very friendly, sit outside under royal palmtrees... Dog friendly when you sit outside. Located in a beautiful court yard. Elegant, but you can wear shorts. You will leave happy.

Pros: dog friendly, easy parking, elegant

Cons: none
