Editorial Review for Sullivan Room – by Amanda Nowinski

The Scene
Not exactly home to the uber-glam model set, this basement-level club attracts a mostly white and straight crowd with a boisterous party attitude. Persian carpets, velvet couches and an excellent sound system warm up the main room, where almost every table is marked "reserved"--though anyone is welcome to take a seat if the club hasn't completely filled up. An energetic bar staff makes it easy to get a stiff drink.

The Draw
House music dominates every night, pulling all the girls in clicky high heels to the dance floor with their hands in the air. In the closed-door and velvet-roped VIP rooms, odd mismatched couches lead to a bathroom reminiscent of the Bates Motel. Surely, you will not bump into Chloe Sevigny or the Hilton sisters at the Sullivan Room, but that shouldn't prevent you from getting your groove on.

I went to Sullivan Room to see my favorite DK, Kaskade, last saturday night...Mr. Raddon was excellent (as usual) but Sullivan room is SKANKY!!! Three bathroom stalls were out of order in the women's bathroom, and the place just reeks of this gross "I want to be underground and dark and nasty" vibe...what is with that? Drinks are average, and the bartenders were trying hard, but this place is just kinda yucky in general....I wouldn't want to go back. Its so dark, and gross, and underdecorated...maybe that's just their vibe, but that's just not my taste. The bar tries to have a degree of fabulosity by having these mini chandeliers (sp?) over the bar, but it really doesn't help much. Honestly, I hope Kaskade doesn't play here again in the near future, there are so many other better clubs with more space!! Not recommended, sorry :-(

I went here with my wife, both of us who happen to be huge electronic music goers. I live in Detroit and am from Long Island, working in the city for a few months. This place compared to Pacha, Cielo and Rebel is absolutely nasty. I love the underground yet clean and posh atmosphere. It is like going into a modern day underground bar. It gives the best of both worlds, one moment I felt like I was in Detroit in a dark nasty underground venue, next minute I felt like I was in a more chic atmosphere. I tend to be a tad picky about the electronic music I can tolerate, and this took the taco as far as NY is concerned. The crowd was good, mature. Good looking people, friendly, all having a good time. My bar tab is not too clear in my mind, but I know it was a lot, but it's NY, what do you expect? 2 Damn Cheeky were the Dj's that opened for Luke Fair and they were great. Filthy filthy beats I tell you, absolutely blew out Luke Fair. I actually don't remember Luke Fair at all because I was so impressed with 2 Damn Cheeky. All in all, if you can't stand the heat stay out of kitchen, i.e. the Sulivan Room. This place is cool for the young and young at heart that want to enjoy some great house/electro/prog house...

Pros: Great beats, cool vibe, great location

Cons: Small space, bad hangover
