Editorial Review for Hugh Taylor Birch State Recreation Area – by Jennifer Osorio
In Short
Located on 180 acres of prime oceanfront property in the middle of Fort Lauderdale, Hugh Birch is one of the few remaining areas in dense South Florida where you can spot tropical hardwoods, mangroves, natural lagoons and several species of endangered flora and fauna. Both cabins and tent camping sites are available by reservation. The beach, while small, is usually quieter than nearby beaches outside the park.

Insider Tips
The ExtrasWhile much of the attraction of this park is its serenity in the midst of an urban city, Hugh Taylor does have plenty of activities. Self-guided nature trails allow you to walk through the tropical hammock. If you'd prefer to see the park from the water, canoes can be rented. There's also a 1.7-mile exercise course, shaded picnic areas, and a visitors' center.
Fun FactThe visitors' center was once the home of Hugh Taylor Birch himself (a lawyer who donated the park to the state in 1949).
