Editorial Review for Shorty's Bar-B-Q – by Jennifer Osorio Kissell
In Short
A favorite since 1951, Shorty's often has lines of hungry people stretching out the door. The old-fashioned log cabin building is bare-bones, with concrete floors and long wooden picnic tables. Seating is family-style, utensils are plastic and service is friendly and quick. A bulletin board menu lists various combinations of beef, chicken and pork, including platters and sandwiches. Ribs, including the baby backs, are lightly sauced, wood-smoked and grilled.

Insider Tips
Save MoneyWeekday lunch is a particularly good time to go, with three specials less than $5.
The ExtrasMost dishes come with crinkle-cut fries, coleslaw and garlic bread, but don't miss the corn on the cob: It's sweet and dripping with butter. Also, diners can choose from two sauces: The dark, sweet, tomato sauce sits on the tables, while a vinegar-spiced sauce is available on request.

This place has amazing BBQ. The ribs, pulled pork sandwich, onion rings and sweet potato are fabulous- this is proper Southern BBQ at its finest. I'm completely addicted to this place and sometimes pass up opportunities to go to more upscale restaurants to go to Shorty's. Its also a great value for your money. Make sure you go to their website before going because they often post coupons. Service is colorful but good. The one thing that sometimes disappoints me about the place is that more than once when I've been there, they've run out of something I've wanted to order.
Pros: delicious food
Cons: The guilt after eating so many calories......

Even when BBQ is bad -- it is still tasty. Unfortunately, that doesn't hold true for Shorty's. The Shorty's on South Dixie Hwy serves low quality products and ranks low on the taste meter. The pork is hard and stringy, and the spare ribs have less meat on them than Nicole Ritchie at an anorexics anonymous meeting. The sauce is not thick and sweet or even slightly spicy like good BBQ should be, but namely brown, runny, vinegary goop. At first, I thought we had come to this place on a bad day, so we went back last week and had the same disappointing experience. If you've lived in Florida most of your life and have never experienced southern BBQ, or even Texas or Chicago BBQ, then I guess this mediocre fare would fit your palate. But if you've been enlightened and have had even moderately good BBQ in another locale, then you'll understand that Shorty's is just a pretender. Don't be fooled -- Shorty's has been around a long time not because it's good, but ONLY because it has no real competition from any other traditional BBQ houses in South Florida.
Pros: Easy to Find - Convenient
Cons: Low Quality BBQ, Poor Sauces, Poor Waitservice and Head in the Sand Management
