Editorial Review for Captain's Tavern – by Citysearch Editors
In Short
Despite the faux-nautical kitsch, this is a serious restaurant with real skill in the kitchen. There are many fish in the sea, and most of them are on the Captain's five-page menu. All are pristinely fresh and come cooked in a veritable United Nations of styles. Clam chowder is creamy and full of clams. Pan-fried soft-shell crab is golden, crispy and sea-sweet. The signature cheesecake is almost impossible to pass up.

Insider Tips
What To DrinkAs impressive as the Captain's 600-bottle wine list is its surprisingly modest markup. That allows you to enjoy the rich, creamy, complex 1999 Ancien Carneros chardonnay for a quite reasonable $48.
Save TimeThe Captain doesn't take reservations, though, so consider eating at non-peak periods.

I have eaten here numerous times and I have yet to have a bad meal. The ipswich belly clams, coleslaw, salmon...everything is delicious. The service is usually right up there, but can lack slightly in very high traffic times which is expected, but the food is fresh and yummy...I would eat here once a week if I could.
Pros: food, service
Cons: slightly hidden location

Waiters calculate their own tips on bills for 6 or more diners, and "erroniously" add tip on the sales tax as well. You have to check the tip calculation carefully as management does not do so and it is not computerized.
