In Short
Behind the plain-Jane storefront in the giant Dadeland Station mall is a real gem. Casual and unpretentious, Lan delivers exciting pan-Asian cuisine with South Beach flair at south Miami prices. The lengthy menu draws on Chinese, Japanese, Thai and Korean cuisines and features both traditional and eclectic dishes. Wok-fried spinach with chilies and garlic nods to classic Szechuan. "New century" sushi roll with tuna, mango and tobiko wrapped in rice paper instead of nori is pure Lan.

Haven't been in quite a long time but I remember them being quite good. Went for their lunch specials several times. Located with Target, Bed Bath and Beyond and Best Buy so it is convenient to stop in while shopping for a bite to eat.

Lan's Yellow Curry Vermicelli was almost [sickeningly] sweet. The coconut milk was too thick and creamy, making the entire dish looked and tasted greasy. The sushi and potstickers were acceptable. The hostess could be curt and unfriendly, but the server was nice enough. They could be less courteous during busy time, but at least they still managed to provide average service. The place was pleasant and inviting for an afternoon lunch, but I wouldn't recommend it for group dining.

There was a great selection of food. It's a bit more affordable if you go to restaurant.com and buy a gift certificate because you'll easily spend at least $35 when ordering for two. I highly recommend the calamari and the passion fruit creme brulee. Even though our waitress was the only un-friendly part of the staff, we still had a great experience.

The Extras:
A mere handful of wines are offered but they've been chosen with care. Check out the 1999 King Estate pinot gris ($28), whose bright tropical fruit is barely kissed with sweetness, making it ideal with spicy foods.
