Knife-wielding chefs put on a show at this communal Japanese grill..
In Short
Benihana started out as a tiny four-table restaurant in New York City's theater district before becoming an international chain. Diners sit around large tables where chefs ostentatiously chop, slice, stir-fry and grill. Entree options are simple--shrimp, chicken, steak and scallops--and preparation is uniform. Every entree comes with a similar stock of sides: rice, onion soup, shrimp appetizer, iceberg lettuce drizzled with dressing, sauteed vegetables and green tea.
Great Food. I found that Benihanna is the best Japanese food in Miami. They provide an entertaining show and although the food is not cheap, it is worth what you spend. (p.s The dipping sauses add tremendous flavor).
False authenticity. I recently stopped by Benihana's for a taste of "real" Japanese cooking. I have to say that I was very dissapointed. Sure.....the structure itself was somewhat aesthetically pleasing ( specifically the garden ) but the food was mediocre. The service is very impersonal...it was obvious they take more importance in their regulars. I was in Japan 1 year ago..and I have to say Benihana's does not come close to authentic Japanese cuisine.
