When infamous bohemian trendsetter Barbara Hulanicki met Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records, in 1987, the first boutique hotel in the United States was born. The two collaborated on the interior design which combines the Biba-a-go-go look with the multihued style of Jamaica, where Blackwell grew up. With just 12 units, this intimate retreat was a celebrities' favorite, with regular guests including U2, Mick Jagger and Madonna.
