Editorial Review for Joe Allen – by Bill Citara
In Short
Outside, it's a squat, bunker-like building that's easy to drive by without noticing. But it's a microcosm of Miami Beach: Young and old, gay and straight, terminally hip and pocket-protector geek all chow down on well-prepared and well-priced comfort food. The menu boasts a few fancy dishes, but it's really about hearty, homey standbys, like burgers, meat loaf, and liver and onions with bacon, whispy fried onion strands, mashed potatoes and garlicky sauteed spinach.

Insider Tips
What to DrinkThe wine list is as multiculti as the menu, with many fine selections less than $30. For flavor and value, try 2004 Bonny Doon Vin Gris de Cigare ($17), a bright, raspberry-ish rose that goes well with Joe Allen's food.
Know Before You GoEfficient service, plenty of cheap nearby parking and a menu of fairly simple dishes make Joe Allen a perfect place for a quick, satisfying pre- or post-event meal.

I’m giving Joe Allen’s 2 stars because of the habitual over charging by the bartenders. The restaurant is somewhat like an upscale diner and you can eat and drink at the bar as well as at a table. The food is good, if little bland and predictable, but reasonably priced. If you simply drop by for a drink, ask to see a written tab before you leave because the bar staff seem to routinely pad the bill when you ask them how much you owe and especially when they see you’re paying with cash– this has happened to me three times over the last year and when I challenged them on it the last time, they simply apologized for the mistake. It’s a pity, the whole situation make me feel uncomfortable in an otherwise very pleasant restaurant.
Pros: Good food, Good Prices
Cons: Overcharging t the bar

After missing Anita the bartender, I ate there last week, they have hired a new daytime bartender named Kelly, Not only did I have prompt service, great food, but what a pleasure to talk to an intellegent bartender, she was very polite, funny and entertaining. My whole experience was wonderful and I will eat at the bar for now on when Kelly is working. What a great addition to the restaurant!
