What People Are Saying About Peoples Barbeque

In Short – The space is airy and simple, with high ceilings and metal tables and chairs. For barbecue try the ribs or the chicken, which come with a tangy, vinegary sauce. The barbecue is oak-smoked in an open pit and comes out smoky and juicy. Other options include oxtail, ham hocks, smothered or fried pork chops, fried conch and chitterlings. Side orders are worth special attention, especially the candied yams and the macaroni and cheese.

Editor's Tips

Where To Sit:
You can get table service from wise and friendly waitresses or order at the take-out buffet. Neighborhood residents mix with school board and police workers from nearby downtown Miami buildings.
Know Before You Go:
Founded almost 40 years ago, People's has thrived by never deviating from Overtown roots. Current owners Derek and Carl Lewis took over the restaurant from their parents and moved it to its present location in 1996.

Excellent BBQ

by msld at Citysearch

I read a review prior to going to Miami I was looking for a good bbq eatery and read about Peoples and I decided to go and it was well worth the trip. The food was delicious and the desserts were awesome especially the Butter Cream Cake it was so moist I wish I would have bought more than one piece :) had I known. It's a down home place worth you trying you won't be disappointed.

This is delicious. If I could steal their cook to be my personal chef, boy I would! The stunning flavor cooked into the meat is mouth watering. I still thank my friend every day for showing me this spot. What a delight!

Excellent food, each dish well prepared. From the juicy smoked bbq ribs, to the creamy mac and cheese, deliciously caramelized candied yams and toasty cornbread. Clean and simple place. Caring staff. Try the sweet Flip-Flop drink (iced tea/lemonade combo). Large portions! Two can share the lunch special.

  • Pros: excellent homestyle cookin'
