The well-heeled diners appreciate the modest and moderately priced menu and casual bistro atmosphere, especially in an area jammed with overpriced, stuffy eateries. Of course, they come for the excellent food as well. For starters, try grilled calamari with tangy ratatouille, steamed mussels in white wine and garlic, or the rich and cheesy onion soup. In addition to fine lamb, chicken and pork dishes, there's an outstanding steak au poivre with simply perfect pomme frites.

Where To SitCompact tables are packed tightly in the narrow space, making private conversations nearly impossible. But the atmosphere is lively and Les Halles boasts the best of everything French, especially the impressive wine list.

Had a horrible meal there in January, 2007. Our table of six received terrible service, the waiter was rude and hurried from the start . Then a leak from the ceiling above started pouring onto us. We realized that the men's bathroom was above and all stood up to ask for a new table. The servers seemed annoyed at our complaint about the leak which was a steady stream . At another table, we never received tableware, no water, it took an hour for our meals to arrive in staggered increments. Food was mediocre, seemed overcooked. No cream served with our coffee, no butter after repeated requests. Dessert tart mushy, chocolate mousse flat. Waited forever for the check. Received an apology and slight discount for enduring the overhead "leak" which stained the skirt of one of our guests. We will not be back!
Pros: None during our visit, very disappointed
Cons: Very pretentious, way overrated, have had better meals at Denny's

If you can get by the initial attitude the staff show, you will be fine. The steak and frites are superb, the wine is good and service is relatively fast.
Pros: steak & frites, promptness
