Editorial Review for Miami-Dade Public Library – by Maria Budet
In Short
Those of us old enough to remember when the Main Library was located where Bayfront Park now stands were blown away when it was moved to the Miami-Dade Cultural Center in 1985. In its current location, the library serves as much more than a research center. Sitting alongside the Historical Museum of Southern Florida and the Miami Art Museum, Readings, the library often hosts festivals and performances on its grounds or in the central plaza. The Main Library houses numerous special collections. The art collection includes the Gleason Waite Romer photographs of Miami in the 1920s through the 1950s, the Van Vechten images of the Harlem Renaissance and other assorted works by Hispanic and African-American artists. The children's literature collection features both contemporary and historic works, and serves both a juvenile audience and professionals with an interest in the area. The genealogy, urban affairs, and Floridiana and government documents collections are also particularly useful and impressive.
