We (husband, son and his wife, and me) just spent 4 days and 3 nights at Key Largo. Son, Chad, found this place before we left Hudson and all of us wanted to see it. It is well worth the effort. It is truly amazing what this man, who had a 4th grade education, accomplished. You'd have to visit it to truly appreciate all he did. One of the things I thought was funniest was he made a redemption center (place for punishment for acting up - one for each of 2 children and 1 for wife in case she got sassy). They were to stick their head through this hole and listen to his lecture for an hour. He figured that would take care of it for about three months. Although he didn't marry nor have any children, he had plans on how to take care of things like this. Note: He didn't make one for himself....lol. He was a genius. This is just one piece of what we saw, read on the pamphlet, and watched a video. We loved it!! Just wish I'd purchased the three publications he wrote but I get overwhelmed and can't decide what I really want to buy until I've already left the place/area.
This 28-ton monument to unrequited love was one lovesick man's life's work..
In Short
Ed Leedskalnin sought to escape the pain of being left at the altar by his young bride-to-be by single-handedly quarrying a 28-ton piece of coral, transporting it and building a castle from 1931 until his death in 1951. This Herculean effort was completed without the benefit of heavy equipment, which still amazes scientists, engineers and laymen alike. Just how he moved those rocks still remains unknown.
Unbelievable use of strenght and courage. My in-laws came to visit and we had just seen a special on Coral Castle so we decided to go and visit this unique piece of work. There is something in this structure that will appeal to anyone visiting.
the adventures of a bride. coral castle is one of the most bazaar, freakish, and hysterical places that I have ever been to. on the way back from the keys towards south beach, the packed car of my sister and her 6 bridesmaids stopped to check out the myth of ed and "sweet sixteen". to our surprise, the staff there was more than willing to fill in the blanks with information about this mystery(they even question whether or not he may be from mars?!?) overall this is a must see, even if its just for some photo ops and a good laugh
