Since 1968, Biscayne National Park, located in the southeastern tip of Florida, has been a refuge for the local marine ecosystem. The park, which is 95 percent water, offers a haven for locals and visitors who journey to its 175,000 pristine acres to find respite from work and cluttered roadways. The park begins just south of Key Biscayne and extends south to Key Largo, running from the mainland out into Biscayne Bay to a depth of 60 feet of water, including 50 or so of the northernmost Florida Keys. One needs a boat to gain unfettered access to all the park's resources.Glass-bottom boat, snorkel-and-dive tours are provided at Convoy Point, but reservations are highly recommended. Other activities include camping, trail walks through hardwood hammocks, scuba diving, snorkeling, and canoeing.
