GREAT HOSPITAL. I was sent to Southern Winds Hospital for a HORRIBLE depression after being pregnant, then I was diagnosed with endometriosis, and I had to have a FULL HYSTORECTOMY done. I went from having all my hormones from being pregnant to having NONE at ALL after my surgery.... I went thru MONTHS of HELL........ my HELL ended when I was sent to this MAGNIFICANT HOSPITAL. Dr. RUIX removed all the pills I was taken, and she found out what my TRUE problem was...... The nurse that took care of me was an ANGEL sent from above...... This Female nurse was there unconditional, I Believe her name was Susy, she is a tall hispanic (cuban) woman with black hair... I thank god she was there to help me..... THANK YOU SUSY.....and the Nurses Aides was ODALYS..... this woman was my sun in that place....I prayed everyday for her shift to arrive..... Being in this hospital and not having MENTAL Health Problems was very very HARD....But these wonderful employees and Dr. helped me thru EVERYTHING, they were kind and respectful, and really treated NOT ONLY ME but all of the MENTAL CHALLENGED that were there. with love and respect.... I am happy that I have never had to go back to Southern Winds........ I praise God that Dr. Ruix was able to find the correct medications for me.....Its been over 1 year and I am a full normal functional woman........ BUT IF I would ever have the need of a Mental Institution, I WOULD NOT EVEN THINK TWICE.... I read a review of someone on this page that spoke bad things about this hospital, all I have to say that yes it is an older looking hospital, but please DO NOT JUDGE A BOOK BY IT'S COVER..... even the food was amazing...... you always hear people complain about the HOSPITAL FOOD....well the food at SOUTHERN WINDS is like going to a restaurant to eat..... they are all amazing..... and I know because I was there for 7 days and Ilived it .Thank you very much for helping me......I hopeyou are there many more years to help others like me

Unbelievably Bad Psychiatric Facility. It's shocking that a facility this inadequate is still in operation in this day and age. Having had extensive experience in mental health facilities due to an incorrect diagnosis (Dr. Pino, one of the psychiatrists on call at Southern Winds, was the doctor who figured out the medication these hospitals forced upon me were actually exacerbating my problems), I know my mental hospitals. This is, aside from one place I was in in Orlando, the worst psychiatric facility I've ever encountered. It's used to warehouse people. The members of the staff who attend to the patients by and large don't care about the integrity and care they must display if they are to be effective mental health workers. They often work two or three jobs, and while that's a result of the meager pay hospitals dole out to its low level employees, the attitude in this hospital is particularly bad. When you walk in, the first desk you see at the end of the long hallway from the main entrance is usually occupied by some employees "hanging out". That's a good example of what these people do. It's a paycheck for them, nothing more, and that attitude is encouraged through the careless behavior of the administrators. The techs (those whose job it is to keep an eye on the patients) frequently are distracted by personal matters, often leaving the patients alone for minutes at a time. Restraints are often necessary in psychiatric care facilities, but at Southern Winds the power to restrain patients is often abused, or the situation is made worse by staff members' lack of interest in the well-being of their patients. Often, the reason given for a restraint would be something like "patient refused to comply with staff directives". Of course, while sometimes that is the case and the workers exhaust all non-physical methods of encouraging compliance before a restraint, it's more common to see a staff member bypass verbal encouragement ("what's wrong? would you like to talk about it somewhere else?") and go straight to, "[Patient] is being non-compliant!" Code is called, patient is (unnecessarily) restrained and given a "cocktail" (another staff favorite, it's a nickname they have for the sedatives they inject into "non-compliant" patients). Never have I encountered such a despicable excuse for a hospital. A couple side notes that are unrelated to the mental health care in this facility, but related to the facility itself: The air conditioning often doesn't work at night, and, there being bars on the windows (and the windows being welded shut anyway), it gets swelteringly hot. And the elevator was about a year past its certification renewal date when I was there. It's a shoddy facility, and quite frankly, a "POS".

a holding pen for people on the helpless end of the stick. that such facilities exist boggles the mind. The Medical Director runs the place by terrorizing the under-trained staff. Employees are usually uncertified and seriously ill-equipped to address any serious medical situation.

Excellent Patient Care. First rate professional staff, kind, courteous, compassionate. The food is great, and the hospital is kept very clean. The adoloscent unit is comlplete with a game room, music room and class room with computers. Would deffinately reccommend it!
