Editorial Review for Mastro's Steakhouse – by Jane Tunks
The Scene
Retro yet dignified, Mastro's does all it can to conjure up the ghost of Frank Sinatra amid a decidedly masculine ambience. Choose the quietly swank downstairs dining room with its vaguely Italian vibe, or the upstairs piano bar, where a chanteuse belts out the standards.
The Food
Knock back a highball while pondering the encyclopedic steakhouse menu. Portions are King Kong-sized and priced accordingly, with a la carte entrees often surpassing the $30 mark. Those who like gimmick-laden appetizers should try the shrimp cocktail set in a bed of vaporizing dry ice. But don't let it distract from the demon red meat. Bone-in rib eye--a fist-thick slab--arrives at the table sizzling in butter. Just as substantial, the baked pork porterhouse seals in all the flavor of its rosy-pink center. Other cuts include a bone-in filet; 40-ounce, double-cut porterhouse; and Kansas City strip.

It's good, don't get me wrong. But good lord! do you seriously need to charge $12 dollars for mashed potatoes? It was violating. We went for a bachelor party so it was a fairly large group. The service wasn't spectacular either. And I thought a thank you from management would have been nice since we did drop almost two large. The wheels just seemed to come off at some point in the night. I give it an average rating because I would probably have liked it much more on a slower night. Plus the 300 pound dude literally rubbing against the back of my chair from his, was a little unappetizing.
Pros: valet
Cons: inside

Would definitely recommend the lobster mashed potatoes - they were nothing short of amazing. The steaks were goood NOT great. The service was impeccable - we were seated immediately, our server was polite and informative. I have to admit, I was a little shocked by my fellow diners - a cougar who nearly knocked me over on her trot to the ladies' room...let's just say, if you want a good laugh at someone else's bad facelift/nosejob or watch high priced prostitutes in action...this is the spot for you!
Pros: Service
Cons: Other diners were trashy
