Editorial Review for La Palme D'Or – by Bill Citara
In Short
This opulent restaurant in the historic Biltmore Hotel is a magnificent bit of Gilded Age architecture that's been meticulously restored to its original 1925 glory. The dining room is a study in plush: mirrored columns, rich fabrics and crystal chandeliers abound. Chef Philippe Ruiz has command of his art down to the smallest detail. Wild turbot, roasted on the bone for maximum flavor, is served with lemon beurre blanc and beluga caviar.

Insider Tips
What to DrinkWine selection is broad, deep and surprisingly well-priced. Many of the best values are Californian, but the silken 1997 George Roumier Chambolle-Musigny is a French sleeper, with lovely licorice-like fruit.

This restaurant has been on my radar for a while, so when faced with a choice for my 45th birthday dinner I choose The La Palme D'Or in the historic Biltmore Hotel in beautiful Coral Gables, my hometown. I consider myself a connoisseur of both fine foods & wines and this place lived up to my expectations. I brought 4 of my wines for the 5 course dinner and the staff was very accommodating ($20.00/bottle corkage). My pairings were perfect to compliment the superb offerings from the kitchen. The seared scallop 1st course was done to perfection and plated beautifully. For the 2nd course ,a seared fois gras with fava beans was ok, but too greasy a dish and would have benefited from a simpler preparation. My main course was buffalo tenderloin that was so excellent it made up for the aforementioned 2nd course. It was heavenly with the vintage Bordeaux I selected. The cheese course that followed was beautifully plated and they were lovely with a late vintage port I brought. The dessert menu was a real treat too! The flavored theme dishes were whimsical and delicious with the cuvee sublime Champagne demi-sec. It played well with the white chocolate plate, the Java plate & the apple plate which our table of 5 shared. The service was attentive for most of the meal and was professional, though they did get a bit overwhelmed as they were busier later in the evening. It was a 3 hour dinner after-all. I can state that this is one of the FINEST restaurants in the entire state & when you add in the perfect ambiance can make for a MEAL of a LIFETIME!

Only on several occasions does one discover a restaurant of such extreme high regard, that getting lost in its wonder is experienced but once or twice in a lifetime. Fortunately for us all, it exists locally here in Coral Gables, The City Beautiful, in the world-famous 4-star, 4-diamond Biltmore Hotel, which is a landmark of this great country. Every single detail of my dining experience was so profound in precision, that even the greatest critics in the world would be challenged to find anything less than outright extraordinary. The food was of course the highlight of the evening with the master, Philippe Ruiz at the controls of the kitchen. With the white-cloth elegance of timeless French refinement, fascinating pool view, and all the service royalty could ask for, all who dine here are privileged to understand why I claim this restaurant to be "The French Masterpiece of America." -L.A.
Pros: Everything.
Cons: None.
